In celebration of summer love, we’ve decided to give you a brief history on promise rings! The idea of a promise ring definitely isn’t a new trend. Promise rings have been given to loved ones for centuries.
Promise rings have been known to date back as far as the 16th and 17th centuries in Europe. The exchange of rings from one to another was symbolic of love and friendship. One particular type of promise ring used was a “scribbling ring,” a ring set with uncut diamond crystals. Couples would often carve their vows to each other into a windowpane with their rings.
Another type of promise ring is a “poesy ring.” Poesy rings are rings that include an engraved vow or quote on the ring’s band.
In modern times, promise rings have taken on several other purposes. Promise rings can be exchanged as pre-engagement rings, chastity or abstinence rings, monogamy rings, or friendship rings.
